Moving abroad is exciting – a new city, new colleagues, new challenges. To ensure your start goes smoothly, we've put together some practical tips for you. These pointers will help you navigate your first few days stress-free and settle in quickly.
Documents and Administration
Before you get started, be sure to check your documents:
- Valid ID or passport
- Copies of your documents (both on paper and on your cell phone)
- Any necessary permits or forms
This way, you are prepared for any situation and avoid unnecessary stress at state borders or with your employer.
Money and Finance
Especially in the early days, it's important to be financially flexible:
- Take enough cash for the first few days.
- Check if your ATM card works abroad
- Keep a small reserve for unexpected expenses.
- Once you've worked for at least one week, you can request an advance in case of an emergency.
This way, you're covered for all eventualities and can focus entirely on your work.
Clothing and personal items
Pack smart – think about both work and leisure:
- Work clothes (if necessary, you can also get these at our office)
- Leisurewear for breaks and evenings
- Medications you take regularly – we've already seen people go off without their medication, and that wasn't very funny
- Adapters and chargers for mobile phones and other devices - trust us, an empty phone can lead to losing contact with colleagues or not finding your way back to your accommodation. So it's better to double-check!
Accommodation and Arrival
Plan your arrival well:
- Note down the exact address of the accommodation
- Save the contact details of the responsible person or the owner
- Share your arrival time in advance
- Find out how to get from your accommodation to work
- You must register your domicile in Austria within 3 days – principal or secondary residence.
This is how you avoid unnecessary stress on the first day.
First day of work
Prepare for your first day of work:
- Know the exact job and working hours
- Save your supervisor's contact information
- Prepare your clothes the evening before – flip-flops may be summery on the first day, but they're rather impractical
Communication
Functional communication is essential:
- Enable mobile data or roaming
- Make sure WhatsApp or your phone is working
- Save the recruiter's contact information
- Be aware of who you can turn to for problems
Mental preparation
Starting abroad can be challenging, but with the right attitude, you can master anything:
- Be aware that the first few days can be difficult
- Expect a certain language barrier
- Take your time to adjust.
- If you have problems, contact the agency first – we'll help you.
IMPORTANT
If any problems arise – whether with accommodation, work, or communication – do not simply leave. Most situations can be resolved if you contact us.
